BIOGRAPHY
He (1945) was trained as ecologist at Leiden University (The Netherlands) and did his PhD research on behavioural ecology and population dynamics of parasitoids. Since 1970, he is active in the fields of behavioural ecology, biological and integrated control, and sustainable agriculture. Joop is Emeritus Professor of Entomology at Wageningen University (The Netherlands), honorary professor at the University of Perugia (Italy) and Beijing Normal University (China), visiting professor at the Piracicaba campus of the University of Sao Paolo (Brazil), fellow of the Royal Netherlands Academy of Sciences, fellow of the Royal Netherlands Society of Sciences and Arts, and honorary fellow of the Italian Academy of Entomology. He is Doctor Honoris Causa of the Szent Istvan University, Budapest, Hungary and the Warsaw University of Life Sciences, Warsaw, Poland. He spent several sabbaticals at the Riverside campus of the University of California, where he – among others – worked with Paul DeBach and Robert Luck, and at the University of Perugia, where he worked with Ferdinando Bin and colleagues. He has published more than 200 peer reviewed papers, supervised more than 80 PhD students and 250 MSc students in the Netherlands and abroad.
