Born in Florence on 10/17/1954. Graduated in Biological Sciences at the University of Florence on 02/18/1980. Head of the Entomology Department of the Natural History Museum of the University of Florence from 11/1/1981 to 10/31/2021.
He is a specialist in Coleoptera Lucanidae and Brentidae. He has carried out research on systematics and faunistic of Italian beetles, with particular regard to protected areas. He has worked on the entomofauna of the Sila-Aspromonte National Park, Casentinesi Forests National Park, Tuscan Archipelago National Park, Maremma Natural Park (GR), “Valle dell’Inferno-Bandella”, “Ponte a Buriano-Penna”, “Alpe della Luna”, Bosco di Montalto”, “Sasso di Simone”, Monti Rognosi”, “Alta Valle del Tevere” Nature Reserves (AR). He has published 4 books and more than 200 papers, describing over 70 new taxa. He has carried out 50 research expeditions in tropical areas: 27 in Africa, 19 in Asia and four in South America. He has been co-supervisor of entomological theses; he took care of entomological exercises for the University courses of Entomology and Zoology II. He is a member of the main Italian and international Entomological Associations. He is referee for several national and international journals (Zootaxa, Entomological Science, Ecology and Evolution, The Coleopterists Bulletin, Redia, Insecta Mundi, etc.).
